President - Rick Dockhorn

What can I say; I am a 50 something year old guy that has worked at a variety of occupations. I have fixed lawn mowers, construction equipment, forklifts, cars, bicycles and now bodies!

Why Massage Therapy? My interest in bodywork began in high school working with various sport teams. Although I didn't pursue further training after high school I did maintain the interest for the next 25 years. After being downsized out of a job, I found myself with some time on my hands and knew exactly what my next career was to be. I attended the Myotherapy Institute in Lincoln, completed the required course work, took and passed the test and became licensed in June of 1994. In October of 1994 I opened an office, Massage Works, in downtown Lincoln. My working week is divided between work in the office, a couple of on-site jobs and volunteering my services at three of Lincoln's senior centers. I am passionate about Massage; I am continually impressed with its healing power and am excited by the growth of our profession.

The other passion in my life is cycling, bicycling that is. Since the day my Dad took off the training wheels and gave me a push, I have loved cycling. Where I ride or what type of bike I ride doesn't matter, I just like to ride.

Who would have thought when I couldn't decide between a major in Psychology or Physical Education back in 1979, that I'd end up in a career encompassing both (and much more!). As many therapists will tell you, their career in massage therapy found them as they were on their way elsewhere. My story isn't very different. After getting all 'degreed out' at UNL, I curiously answered an ad for a 'massage practitioner apprentice' back in 1987 when such a thing existed. How fortunate to have landed in Sherry Smith's Lincoln Massage Center where I completed my apprenticeship and received invaluable experience with a enormous variety of clientele. I set out on my own in 1992. I've been drawn to and still practice very deep and specific work as well as the more subtle, but as profound, modalities. I've been teaching at the Myotherapy Institute for 2 years now. I will never forget hearing Robert Calvert in 1988 addressing the California AMTA chapter, saying "I believe the reason we do massage is that we're creating peace on earth, one person at a time." Amen.

2nd Vice President - Kristie Mayne

I have held a position on the Education committee for as long as can I remember. I obviously love this position as it suits my love for planning a great party. Before I joined the Chapter I had several jobs that have helped in this position. I worked at a hotel call center, with my last job as an assistant group sales manager. I have owned 2 other businesses, landscaping and vegetarian catering.

Then, I met my future husband, moved back to Nebraska and a few years later had twins who are almost 8 years old now. When I was pregnant, I tried to take a break from my volunteer work, but instead, found that I could do things from home on the computer. I have owned my own massage clinic and wellness spa, Midlands Massage Therapy, Inc just off of 78th and Dodge since 1993. It is a large office with 5 treatment rooms and several therapists. With my family (which includes elderly parents), my office and my volunteer work I have lots of irons in the fire. Seems I like it best this way.

Lincoln Massage Center is where I've spent the last 25 years working with a wide variety of clients over the years, many of whom have become good friends. At that time, you could get licensed by apprenticing under an already licensed massage therapist, which is what I did.

Having the Lincoln Massage Center has been a two-fold opportunity for me to help people. Not only by giving me a great chance to work, but also has given other therapists a place to work.

I've been blessed to have two sons. My oldest son, Sean, and my youngest son, Adam. Adam is married to Lori and they have my grandchildren, Samantha and Zander. What joy they bring me.

I've been an AMTA member for 22 years. In that time, I've enjoyed the benefits of having our professionalism and standards raised. Serving on the AMTA-NE Chapter Board has give opportunity to give back a small amount of all the valuable benefits that I feel I've been given by being an AMTA member. For the past 5 years, I've served as the Chairperson of the Public Relations Committee, was elected Secretary for two years; and Treasurer for the past year and a half. It's been a great learning experience and a chance to get to know some of my fellow massage therapists.
